The Future Vijlen
Vijlen, a village in the Netherlands, has a rich history dating back over 1,000 years. Located in the province of Limburg, Vijlen is unique as the only hilltop village in the Netherlands. The village's origins are believed to trace back to the early medieval period, with the first historical mention of Vijlen found in documents dating to around the 9th or 10th century. Over the centuries, it has retained its charming character, shaped by its proximity to natural landmarks like the Vijlenerbos forest and the Lombergbeek creek, the church as well as its vineyards and orchards.The key priority for Vijlen’s future is to preserve its existing qualities while introducing new housing in a way that maintains these unique identity.
While adding 10,000 houses would overwhelm Vijlen, a more suitable approach would be to build around 2,000 new homes in Vijlen and nearby villages such as Berg en Terblijt, Valkenburg, Margraten, Gulpen, Partij, and Mechelen, situated between the larger cities of Maastricht and Aachen. This nature-inclusive housing development could improve accessibility and encourage economic growth. Most importantly, regional strategies are needed to address the housing shortage effectively.
